Some Tips while working in Different Culture

Saudi Gulf, September 2009

Some tips while working in different culture (or country)

Actually I was eager to write about this since long time ago, sharing my personal tips to face different environment and culture of other location / country. Firstly, these tips are based on my experiences solely. Other people may have other opinion on their own experiences. Frankly, my traveling experiences are not enough for the time being, however, still need to be dug it out more. For instance, most of Indonesian area, I have visited, but Papua is still out of my experience. I was about to go there, when consider to work as rock mechanics engineer while working in Golder Associates consulting or when I was willing to accept offering from Freeport as geotechnical engineer. For international area, I may have to consider Europe, America and other countries, rather than Asia, Australia and Middle East for example. Let’s see whether I could cover all area on my globe some day.
Generally, traveling to some new locations are interested, to be honest. We will get new experience from other different culture and custom. However, we may see this should be kept it as natural as before. Some case, if we see beautiful flower, do not touch it, just see it…leave it as natural as before. Do not ever think you are a God, could change established things suddenly. Remember we come just solely for working and traveling. Not less and not more.
As I mentioned before, tips below is listed with consider to my solely experiences. It may be suited to your own personality. Here is the tips :

  • First thing and the important thing are preparing eligible travel documentation such as passport, visa resident ID, etc. Make it some copies and to be put in separate pocket, just in case we lost it.
  • Other personal preparation such as : credit card, money, personal medicine, phone card, regional map, mobile charger, universal socket, int’l roaming mobile phone plus its spare (if it is necessary), satellite phone (if you are going to uncovered GSM), etc.
  • Search any information regarding your traveling place (whether security banded exists), interested places, local culture, weather condition, accommodation, transportation, etc. We may gather this from googling, friend’s info, wikipedia, Encarta, etc.
  • Search any greeting or other most common talks in local language, we may consider to local website, Encarta – this is the best I usually use because pronunciation included.
  • If you are willing to take some picture of local people closely, please ask to them firstly. If they are asking for money, just leave it. This is most of my interested thing since human being’s face is unique.  It tells some past stories. Some of places / people / activity are not allowed to be captured, so we may ask firstly.
  • Diverse with local people and try to understand their habit/custom, suggested to know new some local words, simple ones, so it would show how appreciated you are. Try to get local food or drink to show your appreciation to their custom.
  • Do not engage with woman personally – but this is solely happening on some area. Avoid to be with woman who are single in late night, unless it is really necessary. Some areas consider it as “tabu”.  However, it will be interested experience also hehehe but again, you should understand local custom unless you will be going to jail or be punished in local rules.
  • Try as best as possible to smile…smile is most general body language in human being’s story (but depends on what kind of situation is hehehe). But at some area and certain custom, bringing a smile to girl would give different perception hehehee it could be good or bad movement from yours side hahaha.
  • If you have own religion, bringing your own religion stuffs will make you much safe (however that is solely my believing). It always works when I work in middle jungle or offshore.
  • Try to get positive thought coming from local people, basically nervous

Pile Monitoring – Returning

Saudi Gulf, September 2009

Pile Monitoring – Returning

I have been waiting to get again involved with pile monitoring jobs for 5 years…finally I made it, getting back to my wave interpretation knowledge, join with some counter partner from fugro france. Working at some offshore area (close with Kuwait border) for pile installation in some jacket tripod – well, actually none of them are practically done now – when wrote this story hahaha

I am really interested to PDA as one of my geotechnical skill. It is related to wave interpretation from impact energy translates into kinematics energy. Sometime I need to fully understand what the ground condition type is, typical of damping value, pile behavior under dynamic impact, impedance factor, etc. It is really challenging me. It is match with my geotechnical meaning in first insight…“the only certainty is uncertainty” hahaha

Anyway in this specified mission, I am so pleasant to have other knowledge how to process data coming from PDA record, well firstly (but it is still) really pain the ass…fugro france engineer uses all manual processing in french language, really hard to understand…somehow it has to be understood at the end. Basically, they use those below spreadsheets to check or summarize actual data record, i.e.
- Quirep : for pile monitoring log – contains stress control in pile (avoid overstressing in pile) and hammer energy output. This may be helpful to control or improve pile installation method.
- Quinaman : for quality record check – contains recorded sensors and its proportionality ; and pile eccentricity accordingly.

Please don’t ask me what the meaning of those file name above..it was same question that I asked to them before. It was meaningless related with its function. For instance, quinaman is name of British cake hahahaha what a silly name…

Those monitoring record will then be reported together with CAPWAP analysis at the end. It is roughly same that produce from PDIPLOT, but some of output are specified to be presented.
Mmmm I think those results are pretty help me to check through all pile record, especially it summarizes all pile record into some graphs..Good thing to know..

How if you are in landslide

Cianjur, 2001

How if you are in landslide

This story was happening for long time ago, it was in 2001, while I was in college as undergraduate student. I was working as part timer in insitu rock testing team, located in Cianjur, West Java. It was jungle and rarely occupied with people. For sure it was rainy season, at one and two day before happening, it was really raining.
Unfortunately, in middle of this fieldwork I still had examination in Prestressed Concrete Class. One day more for examination, I was still being in field, how amazing experience J

At the nutshell, in early morning I ought to wake up and ought to walk to nearest village within 4 hours, alone. Yes alone, no one would accompany me. In the middle of path, there was an existing landslide with approximately 20m wide and fallen from 15 to 20 meter above me. No excuse for me, it has to be crossed straightly. I starred for awhile, looked to very soft muddy soil mixed with various sizes of boulders. Okay, first thing first…just go ahead.
One my feet was in muddy, it was so soft...excuse me…very soft, even half of my leg embedded into it. I thought it was still okay. Then my other leg stepped into it, and you know what. Even I could lift my other leg, it was practically like muddy soil sucked all my embedded legs into it. I tried to lift my legs very hard, and finally it had been released…but my shoes left inside…oh no…even I could not lift my shoes. Oh well, I thought without wearing shoes would be much easier, only my shocks left.

Another obstacle, there was a big boulder right just in front of me. I thought its size was similar with two people. When I tried to pass by underneath it, the boulder started to roll down. Oh my God, even my single foot steep could make this boulder roll down. Really damn soft soil!! Okay, I ought to pass by over it…and it did it. Fuiiihhh…And another obstacle, but this is really dangerous. There was a snake in front of me, about 3m away. And it showed attack position. Shit!! Bloody shit!! All I needed was to calm down. How I make myself calm down if my heart run so fast. I grabbed small branch, and climbed up with very hard. At finally I hit hard ground to stay, so I could avoid the snake. What an amazing experience!

Eventually, I successfully reached nearest village with very mess dress but I was really exhausted and decided to stay in one of villager home, our camp, until tomorrow. I could not attend my examination, but I got new experience to be in landslide. When I told this story to my lecture, Pak Wisjnu (Ir. Wisjnu Yoga Brotodihardjo,M.Eng – RIP), and he just had a short inquiry, “why didn’t you take the muddy soil. Preferably underneath 1- 2 meter below, so we may know how moist the soil is for being failure.” Oh no..I never thought about that..I was so panic!! Hahaha

Some of learning points that I could take from this experience are :
- Try not to seat on it if it is necessary. Give our opinion how soft it is, by measuring with some tool (such as : branch, pocket torvane, pocket penetro, stick etc).
- Try to get some sample from it, preferably 1- 2 meter below it, so we may have a chance to get moisture as natural before it has been failure.
- Beware to boulder (or snake-if you consider to it), because failure landslide still has movement further. No one can predict it.
- Estimate dimension of failure area, most of important is to locate “crown” and typical of landslide.

Hope it will happen to you also hahaha amazing story for geotechnical learning pratically..never happen in your reference book.

How to understand term of plasticity

My lovely bed at home, 8 June 2009

How to understand term of plasticity
Firstly, I am really sorry if you are in the middle of your supper while reading this topic. It is quite slipshod but it is worthy in order to feel soil classification…for geotech engineer for sure!

This clue may helpful if you are young geotech engineer who is involved in soil classification at newly jobs.
What is plasticity? What is effect after knowing it? How could feel plasticity from cohesive soil?

As rule from our soil mechanics founder, Atterberg who are agro scientist (if I am not wrong), cohesive soil may roughly classify if Plasticity Index (PI) > 50 then we could quote this soil is “in plastic zone”, and vice versa if PI < 50
One thing that you could give an idea is to take out “sticky dried snot” from your inside nose. Yes...it is very helpful to feel the plasticity as you know it is made from very fine material (dust) that is similar with clay, and also from water (snot). Trust me, while you try to roll it on and on…you could feel how plastic the material is. It is perfect…while the material being rolled, no sticky material part left on your finger. It can be formed to ball with any crack. Really it is perfect clay! Try it! But don’t forget to wash you hand afterward…otherwise some material may swallow in your stomach…yaks!!------------

How to order Tea in Singapore

How to order Tea in Singapore

There are many customs if you are in travelling time in some country. Most likely, they have different way with yours. No excuse also it really happen when I stayed in Singapore. Yes…even in Singapore, the international country part of South East Asia. Most of people have communication in English, somehow Chinese language is sometimes still being used in their life community…even to foreigner like me :-)

For instance, if you get hungry and thirsty, then you are in part of common people in Singapore, you would prefer to go “HBC kiosk community” which really much cheaper than you found in big fancy restaurant. With money in your pocket at least 4 to 5 S$, you are able to take one package of main course meal and drinking. As usually, drinking kiosk is a “Toke”, big boss of all kiosks. Quite make sense, whatever kind of meal you take, you will always need a drink. This is really a problem if you are trying to order tea, you will need this local terminology.

· Teh O = Hot tea
· Teh O Peng = Tea with ice
· Teh = Tea with milk

How about if Toke is an Indian :

· Teh tarik = tea with milk

That’s all you need if you are trapped how to order a cup of tea in HBC kiosk community.

Can you now??
Sure ah sure ah…
Can lahhhh….

Geo-Hazard Risk Management

Jogjakarta, August 20 – 23, 2008

Geo-Hazard Risk Management

It was amazing moment when I had a journey to Geology Engineering and Civil Engineering – Gajah Mada University at Jogjakarta. I met with lecturer Dwikorita Karlinasari (GE) and Teuku Faisal Fathani (CE) in PT Inco business trip purpose for purchasing early warning system tool in order to anticipate landslide movement in PT Inco operation area.

Most of our discussion were related how to handle landslide risk with consideration of un-technical matter. This consideration was far away from usual technical matter, in the other word, non geotechnical text reference which we all know it is not coming up naturally from all the study we got usually in university.
I am really realized that this consideration towards into geotechnical for urban area. Eventually, the final objective would be led to how to explain and “waking up” urban people on geotechnical problem for their resident.

Some of un-technical matter that I took from both lectures in related to landslide hazard management are roughly listed below :
· How to explain urban people facing geo-hazard in their living place (ex : seismic map, landslide, potential map, etc.)
· How to empower knowledge of urban people to understand basically geo-hazard (mainly landslide) in their life.
· Both points above will be finalized to build hazard risk management based on circumstance of urban people (however involving government interest in this case would be highly much helpful).

The non-technical matter include psychology study, social study, etc which be far away from technical matter, however this non-technical is to be blended with technical matter.
From this point, I can see the geotechnical study would toward into new wave that hopefully involving urban people as part as geotechnical study in their life and living place.

Many thank to some students and local people who involve through nice discussion in this tremendous journey (mainly in Karanganyar Village at Southern Java); named Sanny, Bagus and Ari.

Cultivation of Engineering Judgement - RALPH PECK

Cultivation of Engineering Judgement
RALPH PECK

1. You can make every assignment count. Dealing with non-technical nature such as dealing with people.

2. Teach your brain to register what your eyes see. Always draw everything in field note book.

3. Evaluate consciously the size of things. Visualize numerical quantities, rate, etc.

4. You should of course read. Technical literature, journals, advertisement, capability of equipment, new records in foundation depth, totally new construction concepts.

* Self-training and self-discipline.
